During my midwife scan at 34 weeks, I was informed that it was likely that my baby was in a breech position, and that I should go to the Echopunt – Verloskunde Centrum Oost to get an accurate overview of the baby’s position.
My appointment was scheduled for the following week, where the midwife scanned my belly and did a check to see that growth of the baby – the baby was developing well, despite the baby showing up slightly larger than 35 weeks as 37.4 weeks in fetal size.
It was confirmed that my baby was in a tight frank breech position ( or a perfect yoga pose as I like to call it, with her buttocks pointing downward with the legs folded at the knees).
The midwife explained that I would be a good candidate for the ECV procedure. This involves two trained midwives applying firm pressure to the abdomen so that the fetus will move into a head-down position which is optimal for birth.
I had done some prior research into the ECV procedure, and whilst there are many success stories, there are also some associated risks, such as the of twisting or squeezing of the umbilical cord, reducing blood flow and oxygen to the fetus. Furthermore, labour can be triggered by the procedure. Even though the fetus and mother are monitored throughout the procedure, I felt very strongly that this was not something that I wanted to put my baby or myself through.
Ultimately I decided to follow my new mummy intuition and not go for the ECV. I wanted to first proceed with holistic treatments which I heard could also be successful, such as acupuncture, moxibustion, chiropractic procedures, yoga and advice from the spinning babies website.
The midwife at Echopunt made it very clear that my baby would be unlikely to move out of her position without some external help. But being a stubborn person, I decided to dedicate the last month of my pregnancy to get this baby to move in a natural way. 🙂 🙂
I will keep an update on the holistic treatments and activities that I’m currently undertaking. Starting with my weekly acupuncture and moxibustion treatment with Corrine at Birth bliss and alignment yoga course with Kamini Stam.
